What is Gigabit Ethernet?
Gigabit Ethernet is the one step beyond fast ethernet. When I say one-stop beyond, I mean it is A LOT quicker!
Gigabit (GBPS = Gigabits per second) is the transmission of 1000 Mbps (Megabits per second) of data. Now that is fast!
It’s so fast that in essence, not many devices or connections manage to use up 1 Full Gigabit. Instead, what people usually do is to use the existing installed cable and split it into multiple fast ethernet connections.
In essence, Gigabit ethernet works in the same way as fast ethernet, which is through twisted copper wires (twisted pairs). It can be run through any Cat5e and Cat6 cable if configured correctly.
For short distances, Gigabit Ethernet is a very powerful way to transfer data at ridiculously fast speeds or to distribute high-speed access to multiple endpoints inside the network.
