How to Rewire a Patch Panel

We at Attock Network Products Ltd supply the dual-type patch panel which is a 110 and Krone type. Other suppliers may provide 110 types or Krone type only, but not a dual-type.

Remove cable jackets from incoming Ethernet cables

To expose the wire inside the incoming ethernet cable, you must remove the jacket by approximately 40mm and discard it. Good wire strippers will expose the wire inside the incoming ethernet cable, then you must remove the jacket by approximately 40mm and discard it.

There will also be slight differences in the construction of the cable depending on whether you are using Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat 7 cable.

As we have mentioned in another one of our blogs, the ethernet cable is eight wires or four pairs.

There is a reason for the pairing and twist of the cables this way. Please refer to our article – What is an Ethernet cable? and also Cat5e Cable Wiring Schemes.

It is a crucial part of the structure and workings of the cable.

Untwist the wires and spread the pairs slightly, inside the cable, you will find the twists in the cable. Untwist the cable slightly but still, keep the same pairs together and do not mix them. You will see that the pairs are composed up of a solid colour and a white stripe of the solid colour in that pair.

The connector blocks on the patch panel have labels/stickers on them to guide you to the required colour code. Ensuring you maintain the twist as close to the connector block, set the specific coloured wire to the same on patch panel, then using a Krone punch down tool punch down to fix the wired to the connector block.

Make sure you have the cable “snip” part of the tool on the outside.

This will then cut the excess cable thus giving you a need cut termination and a cut that is as close to the connector block as possible. If you have the “snip” part on the inside, you will then cut the wrong side of the cable and not the excess. In which case, you will learn and not do it again !!!!
